Quickbooks Online 2014 Simple Start For Mac

Running a small business is always difficult from a financial perspective and some accounting packages might be too feature packed or too expensive for what you need. Quickbooks Online is aimed at the small business that doesn't need a ton of fancy features and best of all it's accessible online meaning you can access it from any device with a web browser. Being a Mac user it can be difficult trying to find a decent accounts package as most only cater for the Windows PC market. With Quickbooks Online I can use it via Safari and also access it on my iPad and iPhone if I ever need to. It's easy to get setup and includes a 12 month subscription at the time of activation, so you will need to remember that you'll be billed in a years time to continue using the service.

With that in mind it's worth noting that all of your data is automatically backed up for you and that you get free UK-based support if you need it. The interface is well designed and is easy to navigate which is unusual for an accounts package as they can sometimes be a bit complicated to use. So far I've only ventured into entering income and expenses as I don't need a lot of the other features just yet. But should you need it there are a range of other useful features and there are also a number of reports that might come in useful. If you're after an accounts package that's simple and easy to use, that's platform agnostic and that doesn't cost the earth then this might be for you.

It does run online so that's something to bear in mind, it's not like a normal software package that runs on the hard drive of your computer, but that's fine by me. Having everything running online means that all your data will be safe and backed up and that you can access it from anywhere where there's an internet connection. I now run several businesses in the UK. I use an accountant I have known for many years and have always been happy with their service. I have had very little need for such software, especially given the price of accounting software packages. I am not a computer whiz and sometimes find complicated Microsoft software packages difficult to use. I received this software free of charge via the Amazon Vine programme.

In truth I would not have bought such software, given my relationship with my accountant. I therefore used this opportunity to try the software without any risk or guilt. The difference with this product compared to the other QuickBook products I have tested in the past, is that it no longer gives you the full package on the disc.

What you are buying is permission to use the software for a 12 month period. Personally I would never buy such a license. Personally and it is purely a personal opinion, I do not like these type of products that expire after a subscription and then rebill you once a year to maintain access to your work. It was simplicity itself to install.

The software gives you a basic but reasonable and easy to use accounting package. Whilst my area of business pertains to the service sector and does require the holding of stock, the software can easily handle business situations where stock control is necessary.

It can easily track sales, expenses and profits and can create professional looking invoices using PDF's for emails. It can automatically calculate VAT.

It also allows you to create budgets and cash flow projections. In short this software can handle most situations a small to medium sized business can throw at it. This version does not include payroll software which some other programmes give you, allowing you to calculate wages, NI, Tax for your employees. To help use the package there are now numerous online video's showing you how to do things with the software, which makes using it, far easier, than reading the old help pages.as per programmes from days gone.

Whilst I am a stick in the mud and like the reassurance that my accountant brings, this software is a good alternative. It is easy to use and does virtually everything you will require. A great product but as I said earlier I would opt for the normal disc system rather than the 12 month subscription product if I were to buy it. My husband uses Sage online for his small business and I keep the books. He liked the idea of a twelve month free subscription to Quickbooks, and I agreed to set it up. I struggled from the start. The online software is designed to use wizards and is rigid and inflexible.

I wanted to set up a bank account in the QB system. The ONLY way you can do it is to download a CSV file from your online bank account and give it to QB to upload. However I wanted to set up the account as a blank one so I could key in transactions from earlier in the year.

My bank archives things after two months and they are only available as a PDF. Help was useless, there is nothing much in there and there was no help on an Internet search either. This stopped me in my tracks and I did not set up anything else. I appreciate that QB want to make things easy for new starters, but they have overdone this approach to the point where it becomes unusable if you want anything even slightly tailored. 7th March 2015 I received this item as part of the Amazon Vine programme and I am very glad that I had the opportunity to use it. It arrived promptly from Amazon and I had to wait until this weekend to use set it up and to start using it. We use Sage accounts at work, but I have decided to take a chance and to leave my job and set up on my own.

In order to do that I needed an accounts package. My needs are not likely to be vast, but I do need accounts to record the income and expenditure and expenses etc. Opening up the package revealed a plastic case, which contained a CD and an activation code.

My only problem installing this and setting up on my iMac was that the software appeared not to like Google chrome and therefore I had to switch to Safari; not a problem, I just prefer chrome to safari, but nothing too drastic. Within less then 30 minutes I had configured my account for my fledgling business, but not only that, I was able to download the app onto both my iPad and iPhone. This may seem obvious as this is a cloud based system, but both apps loaded smoothly after adding one to my iPad; I haven't tested the apps fully yet, but as I become familiar with the system on my iMac, I think that being able to access my accounts when I am on the road may have some benefits; I am intrigued that there are in app purchases and again I will provide more detail in due course. So was it that easy to set up?

Yes and whilst it states that you do not need any accounting knowledge, may I suggest that you don't however it would be easier if you did have someone with some limited understanding just to start you off. As my business is new, I have very few transactions other than to set up my trading bank accounts (I have four, current, deposit, credit and tax; I hadn't any other accounts to set up, but I did take the opportunity to imprt some data from excel and found it relatively simple to do. Setting up invoices was easy and my accounts were effectively ready to go. There remains much to learn regarding reporting and how to get the best from the apps, but as someone going it alone for the first time, particularly operating as a sole trader, the accounting element of my new business appears to be sorted, I just need to start making the money to make it work. I have not had to use the support service yet, but it is comforting to know that is is UK based and runs for the life of my 12 month subscription; I hope that the costs to renew are a cheap as they are for this year, which at £18.00, i feel is quite a steal.

As this is cloud based there is no need for you to keep backs and so your data is secure for the length of the 12 month subscription, although I do feel a bit tied in to quickbooks, although it is no different to being tied in with Sage and a whole lot cheaper and more flexible. More details to follow after I have entered a bit more than the opening balance on my accounts, set up the business name etc etc. As we enter the new tax year from 5th April and my business starts to roll, I hope to provide more information regarding what I feel is an excellent investment for the sole trader or owner of a small business and if your business expands, you can always move on to Quickbooks essentials or more complex packages.

Having tested many Sage products in the past (such as - which I still recommend) I was curious to see what other developers had to offer. If figured that this Simple Start package might not be good for anything other than keeping track of household bills and expenses but it is good enough to use for business, work, and self-tax purposes.

The user interface is simple and easy and the layout is friendly. This package does not assume that you know everything about what you are doing if you are new to self-taxing and such.

Not really sure about this 'subscription' nonsense though. Why can't they just have a finite price? I suppose the bills at the other end have to be paid too, but it's a bit annoying as I don't really need to access customer support. This package only allows for one user too, but if you are the boss of a small business then this really will provide you with all you need to keep payroll, expenses, income, and taxes running smoothly.

Quick books has been around for a long time now yet it has proven time and time again to update its products and provide a reliable, simple accounting package. This quickbooks online simple start is as, expected a truly excellent package, and, with the new addition of vat accounting this will help a considerable amount of small businesses. I wanted this to help a new start-up and explain to the business owner just how simple and non-terrifying dare I mention SAGE, an accountants dream but a business owners nightmare programme this is. The Simple start issue can be purchased as a yearly package or is available for a monthly fee; whichever way you choose to go, it includes free updates - essential if after the new election any tax details change - it has a strong encryption code so prevents any snooping; its automatic backups are invaluable as it is so easy to forget to do this simple task, if distracted. Downside is that is limited to one user, however this should not be a problem for the smaller business. It does allow you to create and design your own invoices/credit notes/purchase orders; and, best of all, you can import your online banking transactions - brilliant new addition, saving all that copy typing. There is also telephone support available.

All in all a great program for the new entrepreneur or home-based business.
