My new iMac 27' late 2015 came with 10.11.1. I tried to install Aperture 2 (yes I know it's old and redundant but it's what I have and I need to fix some stuff before moving to a new platform) and it failed - with a message that no software was found to install. I updated to 10.11.3 and the same thing happened. I then tried to do a custom install and de-selected the sample pics.

I then got a message saying that the software was incompatible and installing it could damage the OS - but with a button that would allow me to go ahead and install anyway. Call me a coward, but I didn't do this. Has anyone installed Aperture 2 with 10.11.3? How did it go? Do you have Aperture on your MacBook Pro, if so what version is it, and is it registered with your apple ID in the App Store. Try transferring it to your iMac, drag and drop it in the Applications folder.

Now open the App Store (make sure you are signed in), see if you get a notification for an update to Aperture, (only 3.6.1 runs on El Cap) if you do get a notification then you may be able to update Aperture to 3.6.1. What you need to do is move the Aperture you copied to the Trash don't delete.

Relaunch the App Store and see if you are able to download this newer version of Aperture. If you want more advice on using Aperture you should ask a question on the Aperture forum.

I have 2.1.4 on my still-going-strong 2009 Macbook Pro. I also have 2.1.1 on the disc that came with the Macbook Pro. 2.1.4 doesn't run very well on the Pro though. And I think some of the problems arose well after the OS update to 10.9.5; so I had assumed that the version installed was corrupted. For example the crop function stopped working.

But I can't be sure exactly when the problems started. I suppose it doesn't matter if the version I copy across to the iMac is a bit corrupted, if it will be replaced by 3.6.1. Is that right, or does the update build on the existing software? In any case, I'm pretty sure I was never offered any free update to Aperture 3 on the Macbook Pro, so I'm guessing it was a paid update? If none of this works, is there any other way I can get hold of 3.6.1?

Thanks again. I cannot remember if you had to pay for Aperture 3 if you already had Aperture 2, it is very possible. As you can see from the screenshot provided by sberman above it shows that version 2.1.4 has some problems on Mavericks can't be used on Yosemite, and although shows there is no data that it is fair to assume that it won't work on El Capitan. Is the copy of Aperture you have on the MacBook Pro registered under your Apple ID. If it is what does the App Store say under Purchased if it is not listed then it may be it is not registered. I have a Mavericks install on my Mac Pro and it has Aperture 3.5.1, are you able to update to that.

I would imagine that you could only update to a later version of 2 and not any version of 3 If you take the Aperture.app from your MBP and drag and drop it onto your iMac in to the Applications folder you will not be able to launch it, it will be greyed out, with a circle with a diagonal through it. Now if it was registered it may display in the Purchased section of the App Store (relaunch the App Store).

If it shows in Purchases then there may be a possibility that you can get 3.6.1. Below is a link to a procedure from a fellow contributor on how to get Aperture 3.6.1 working.

It mentions Yosemite but the procedure is the same for El Capitan but it also points out that the procedure is really for those who were on Aperture 3. However it may be worth a try with your Aperture version, it will not do any harm to your iMac, but always proceed with caution. There is not any other official way to get Aperture anymore as you know Apple have stopped developing it in favour of the poor, poor Photos app which comes with the OS. Here is the link to the procedure.

As I suggested before you may get a better more concise answer to your question from the Aperture section of these discussion forums. Thanks again Eau Rouge. It was registered when I first bought it, but it doesn't appear under purchased in the app store. And as we have confirmed that Aperture 3 was a paid update, I'd say I have zero chance of getting it to work.

Mac

I will just have to haul out my old old iMac and do what I need to do on that machine. I had trouble several years back when my Aperture library got corrupted. I want to try to repair it, among other things. As you advised, I'll go to the Aperture forum with any queries about that exercise. I really appreciate all the advice! Apple Footer.
